Last night, my husband and I started our Maine vacation off right. It was the perfect beach day enjoyed with family. The low tide in the afternoon was perfect for swimming and exploring–we all took turns in the water, and with the help of her great auntie and uncle, our daughter even found her very first sand dollar! It was broken perfectly in half, but still a sweet keepsake from a special day.
We capped off the day with happy hour at one of our favourite places, Shade (the restaurant at the one and only Higgins Beach Inn). We were seated in a quiet, cozy corner on the front porch dining area, which was perfect for some good conversation and people-watching on Ocean Ave.
Shade has the most delicious cocktails, so I was excited to see what was new on their menu this summer. I went with the grapefruit and rosemary daiquiri which was both tangy and refreshing with a pretty lemon and rosemary garnish, and my husband had a glass of white wine. We thought we’d just share an appetizer or two, but since everything looked incredible and we couldn’t make up our minds, we ended up trying four amazing appetizers: colossal shrimp cocktail with the tastiest “secret” dipping sauce, PEI mussels and toasted garlic bread, crab cakes with arugula and a cajun remoulade, and an heirloom tomato plate with fresh ricotta, basil, and Marcona almonds. Each dish was fresh and full of flavour–we enjoyed and savoured every bite! Special thanks to Lauren for the wonderful service!

They also have full breakfast and dinner menus (both are amazing!), and happy hour is every afternoon from 4-5pm. They’re located just one short block away from the beautiful Higgins Beach where you can enjoy the gorgeous sunset and sound of the waves on a post-meal stroll.
